Shale/Schiste - Goldsmiths University London
(2012)

"Hollow out the earth for find the sky again,
through the stones, and by the bark of stones"
Shale as a sedimented sheet of rock or stone, and Schiste (the individual stone) bearing the traces of erosion and the impact of water as both phenomena and, to my mind, bearing the traces of past sound, like a primitive sound recording.
In this way the present piece builds up a dialogue between individual sounds and sheets of sound, as well as present (live) and past (pre-recorded) sound interactions.

3 elements are the meaning of the piece :
sounds-instruments, sounds tapes, and graphical-background-traces (score's background), each have a "sonic time independence",
merged into a sort of a nodal point as the event.

David Ryan, Ian Mitchell : Clarinets
Alison Blunt, Joe Zeitlin : Violin and Cello

Christophe Guiraud : electronics

(Direction : David Ryan)

Commissioned, performed, and created by the Ryan / Mitchell / Zeitlin / Blunt Quartet at the Goldsmiths University of London,

20 Oct 2013 (and Kettle's yard Cambridge, 2012).
